Email your response to givanoff@optusnet.com.au

You must be an Australian resident to enter, and you can only enter once. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence on the matter will be entered into. Got that? Good!

The competition closes at 5pm (Melb time) on Friday 10 August 2012, after which I will pass all the answers over to our guest judge, without the names of the entrants. He will then pick four winners. I will then contact the winners by email to get postal addresses. Please note that it must be an Australian postal address.

Now, let me introduce you to our guest judge, geek/writer/cricket club organiser David McDonald.

David McDonald is a professional geek from Melbourne, Australia who works for an international welfare organisation. When not on a computer or reading a book, he divides his time between helping run a local cricket club and working on his upcoming novel. He is a member of the Australian Horror Writers Association, The International Association of Media Tie-In Writers, and of the Melbourne based writers group, SuperNOVA.

A Doctor Who fan from way back, David was, along with Tansy Rayner Roberts and Tehani Wessely, nominated for the William Atheling Jr. Award for Criticism or Review for their New Who Conversations, a series of conversational reviews of the Doctor Who series broadcast from 2005 onwards. They recently recorded their first podcast, featuring the classic episode “Spearhead from Space”. You can read these reviews here.

I asked David to tell us a little about why she loves Sarah Jane…

It’s always fascinating talking to people about their earliest experiences of Doctor Who, and realising how much this affects our ongoing enjoyment. For me, my earliest memories of Doctor Who come from growing up in a small country town in the 80’s with only two television channels. The ABC must have purchased a huge block of programming from the BBC because most of the shows I loved as a child were British. The Goodies, Superted, Bananaman – and of course, Doctor Who. After years of hiding behind the sofa, it is no wonder that these are the episodes that have stayed with me.

Amongst all the Doctors and companions and monsters, there are some that stand out. Just like Tom Baker will always be THE Doctor for me, Sarah Jame Smith is the definitive companion, the one by whom all others are measured. More than just a “damsel in distress”, she was the perfect foil to the Fourth Doctor, and together they brought a sense of fun and delight and wide eyed wonder to the TARDIS that resonated with that country boy. Elisabeth Sladen brought a sense of grace and poise to the role, and I was deeply saddened when I heard the news of her passing last year. I will never forget the part that Sarah Jane played in my childhood, and even now she is what I think of when I think of Doctor Who.

Thanks, David.

Okay, everyone. Start writing your answers.
