DVD Giveaway — Doctor Who: The Reign of Terror

This giveaway is now closed. Thank you to all those who entered.

Thanks to Roadshow Entertainment, I’ve got three DVD copies of the classic Doctor Who story “The Reign of Terror” to give away. This is a six-part historical adventure first broadcast in 1964 with William Hartnell in the role of the Doctor (see my review). Read on to find out how you can score your own copy.

I’ve got a guest judge visiting Viewing Clutter for this giveaway, and he’s come up with this question…

In “The Reign of Terror”, Barbara says she’s learned not to try and change history. If you could change history, though, what would you go back and change? Why?

Email you answer to: givanoff@optusnet.com.au

You must be an Australian resident with an Australian postal address to enter, and you can only enter once. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence on the matter will be entered into. Got that? Good!

The competition closes at 5pm (Melb time) on Friday 1 March 2013, after which I will hand over all the entries (minus the names of the entrants) to the guest judge. After winners have been chosen, they will be contacted by email and listed on Viewing Clutter.

Now, let me introduce to you our guest judge — Ben McKenzie. A writer/performer, he is best known as an actor, comedian and improviser, though he’s also a feminist, scientician, rogue nerd and ginger. Described as ‘geek comedy’s patron saint’ (T-Squat Magazine) and ‘the anti-Hitler’ (Boxcutters), he’s the creator of the Dungeon & Dragons themed impro show Dungeon Crawl, the Melbourne Museum Comedy Tour, many live games with Pop Up Playground and (with John Richards) the hit Doctor Who live show/podcast Splendid Chaps (I would highly recommend checking out their show — details here). You should definitely follow him on Twitter at @labcoatman. Ben’s favourite dinosaur is Stegosaurus.

I asked Ben to tell us about his relationship with Doctor Who

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t watch Doctor Who — though as I wasn’t born with the ability to appreciate science fantasy television, I presume there was such a time. When Doctor Who is good (and let’s be honest — it isn’t always good), it does things no other television show would do, including it’s previous self — it’s been several different shows throughout its lifetime. Doing Splendid Chaps, I’ve reminded myself how much I love the early era of the show, back before we the fans or the makers of the programme had a definite idea what it was about and who the protagonist was. The modern show is good too, but I feel they’ve abandoned flexibility in favour of a format more in keeping with the tropes of modern television. I have also been reading Doctor Who books for more than 25 years; I started with the Target novelisations, and during the wilderness years I collected and read most of the Virgin New Adventures, some of which are still among my favourite Doctor Who stories. I’ve had a crack at many of the other series that have come since, too, and all up I probably have more than 350 Doctor Who novels and books.

If pressed to say who my favourite Doctor is, I usually give a top three, those being Two, Five and Eleven — but as you might guess from the title of my podcast, I’d prefer to agree with the Brigadier and say “Splendid chaps — all of them!” And for the record, I would be happy to see a woman play the Doctor.

Thanks, Ben. Okay folks, now it’s time for you to get writing and enter this giveaway. Good luck!

Catch ya later,  George

My family always watched Dr.Who from the very beginning. We had to have the dishes done and a cup of tea ready to watch it.
